It has been just under a year since SummerK Photography became official. By official, I mean, I quit my “real” job and decided to dive head first into the unknown waters of the photography world. That’s really what it was–It was a deep breath, lots of prayers, and a big leap into muddy, murky waters that were so unfamiliar to me. (Not to mention an insanely supportive husband.)
A year later? The waters are a bit clearer, but I’m still learning how to swim. Sometimes, I’m even gasping for air.
I have learned so much this year–about photography, about running a business, what it means to be a stay at home mom who works from home, and certainly, I’ve learned a lot about myself. Over the previous year there have been a few successes and many, many failures.
The failures were tough, but let me tell you this. . . I’ve learned from them. I’m learning from them.
Just a month or so ago, Chad and I met with a company who was developing a new logo for SummerK. We were asked numerous questions that were both thought-proving and challenging. One particular question was this: are you the best at what you do?
At first I was thrown by the question and offered a nervous laugh. It was like one of those questions you are asked at a job interview: what are your weaknesses? In the moment you have to do a calculation to figure out how to bend your weaknesses into strengths. Something like, I tend to be very type A which can be annoying to friends and family, but is great for an employer.
I didn’t think too long, though, before I blurted out my answer. . . no, I’m not. You see, I’m not naive enough to believe that having less than a year under my belt qualifies me for the Photographer of the Year Award. I am well aware of the road I have yet to travel. I embrace the journey ahead with enthusiasm, and yes, a bit of anxiety, too.
While I may not be the best (no need for a crowd of concurring votes, let’s just assume we all agree and move on) I am passionate about this work. During 2013 the spark that existed ignited into a flame and is now a raging fire. But the number one lesson I learned this year?
It’s a journey.
If I would have taken a moment to think about my answer to the question posed to me I think I would have said this: I’m the absolute best I can be in this particular moment, and I’m getting better with every step.
I know enough about life to understand that you can’t know what you don’t know. Experience is life’s greatest teacher and each new day offers more and more experiential learning. I’m trusting the process and doing all I can to grow and learn each day.
What I know for sure, though, is this. . . I absolutely love working with people, hearing their stories, and capturing their moments. It has been such an honor to be present for the events, families, and couples who have allowed this imperfect photographer into their lives. I look forward to experiencing all that this new year has in store.
But first, a big thank to those who allowed me into your lives this year. . .
And of course the three little souls who, time and time again, allow me to document their every move and (almost) never complained about it.
. . . my heart is filled with gratitude for each and every one of you.
