Michael. Senior Class, 2019.

It is a chilly October evening when I drive to a location to meet Michael for his senior pictures. I am a bit nervous, as I always am, prior to meeting someone new. In those few moments before my client arrives I never know who I am going to meet. Questions swirl: will he like having his picture taken? Will he enjoy the process? Will he like to talk? Will the time be awkward? (I wonder if I’m the only photographer who overthinks before every shoot?)

Michael arrives and I know immediately: this is going to be fun. His smile is welcoming, his demeanor is humble, kindness oozes from him. I learn about his love for baseball and his hopes for his future. I listen as he talks about the unknowns ahead. The feelings of bitter-sweetness that goes with all things new. It is easy to see that Michael is smart. Easy to see the bright future that looms before him. I can’t help but feel gratitude that the future belongs to young people like him. In that moment, I see how bright the future is.

I enjoy working with seniors. I drive away from spending  time with young men and women standing on the precipice of the future and I don’t have to squint to see hope. It’s everywhere in the bright, eager faces of these young people who are filled with dreams, passion and drive. I am grateful to have a glimpse of the future through these seniors.

Michael, it was such a pleasure to meet you. It was a joy to work with you. It is easy to see that your future is bright and I am among those who are excited to see yours unfold.
